Our third Lenten fish fry stop took us to St. James Catholic Church and School in the Highlands neighborhood.

The fish fry itself was held in the school building just a block off Bardstown Road, the main corridor of the Highlands.  On a Friday afternoon, the area is bustling with traffic, and the fish fry steadily increased in attendance throughout the evening.

The line for the fish fry started well with dessert first, and there was quite the variety.  The meal itself was also well made, with the fish being a thicker piece of cod.  NOTE:  (Rolled oysters made a return on this menu again, but alas, I did not order them.  I promise, I will enjoy a few before Easter!)  My meal included the fish sandwich on rye, green beans, cole slaw, and a caramel cheesecake bar.

The best part of the meal, though, may have been the drinks.  The Highlands is known as a very eclectic neighborhood, with many restaurants and bars lining Bardstown Road.  Many of the businesses in this neighborhood cater to the young adult crowd, and as such, many of them offer a wide variety of craft beers.  Just like the neighborhood, this fry included such craft brews such as Upland Wheat Ale, New Belgian Fat Tire, local brew Goodwood Ale, West 6th IPA (brewed in Lexington), and my personal choice of the night, Not Your Father’s Root Beer from Small Town Brewery in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Since the Louisville young adults had an event shortly after the fish fry, I did not stay long for the raffle drawing.  However, I did manage to meet the music director at St. James, who led the church’s trumpet quartet while we were eating.  Fortunately, we will be back later this Lent for another event and will be able to experience the great music again.  Looking forward to the return!
